The Honest Woodcutter Story In English

Many years ago there lived a woodcutter named John in a town. He used to go to the forest every day to cut wood and buy food for himself and his family with whatever money he got by selling them. His routine was going on like this for many years.

One day the woodcutter climbed a tree beside a river in the forest to cut branches. While chopping the wood of that tree, the woodcutter's ax fell from his hand and fell down.

The woodcutter quickly descended from the tree and began to look for his axe. The woodcutter thought that his ax must have fallen around the river and would be found on searching.

In fact, nothing like this happened, because his ax had fallen straight down the tree into the river. That river was very deep and fast flowing.

For half an hour the woodcutter kept looking for his axe, but when he could not find his ax, he began to feel that now his ax would never be returned to him. This made the woodcutter very sad.

The woodcutter did not even have enough money to buy a new ax. Now he started crying while sitting on the bank of the river on his pathetic condition.

He told the god of the river that this time you have an iron axe in your hand and it seems that it is my own axe. One such axe had fallen from my hand while cutting a tree. You give me this axe and deliver the gold and silver axes to their rightful owners.

The deity of the river was very pleased to see such honesty and sinless mind of the woodcutter.

The god of the river told the woodcutter that there is no greed in your mind at all. Had someone else been in your place, he would have taken the gold axe in a hurry, but you didn't do that at all. You refused to even take the silver axe. All you needed was your own iron axe.
